Born to parents John Leigh and Susanna Trafford of Oughtrington Hall, When his mother's brother died Traffford was heir to his wealth, name and arms of the family.  His name was legally changed to Trafford Leigh Trafford.

The Traffords of Oughtrington Hall are not closely related to the Traffords of Trafford Park.
